Further to complaints received from the public in general and the intervention of the Ombudsperson for Financial Services regarding card payments, the Mauritius Bankers Association wishes to bring the following clarifications:
Any vendor in Mauritius who charges commission or an additional fee to clients for payments effected with bank cards, is doing so in breach of rules in force in Mauritius and internationally.
These rules have been set to protect card users, who should not be discriminated against if they prefer using their bank cards rather than another method of payment. The use of bank cards offers greater security, reduces the risk of fraud, and results in greater financial transparency.
The public is therefore advised to request an invoice for any additional fee, and to report the case to their respective bank, who will take necessary actions.
